Who was the Christian leader at Smyrna? According to church history, one of the first
spiritual leaders in Smyrna was Apelles (Apelies). He was mentioned in
Romans 16:10 and was among the seventy disciples that Christ sent out (Luke 10:1), and was
said to be bishop of Smyrna before Polycarp. So, who was the spiritual leader or angel of the
church at Smyrna who John wrote his letter to? It appears that it was Polycarp.

The revelation that Christ is the first and the last simply means that He, as God the Son,
is spiritually eternal or eternally existent. He does not have a beginning and ending as
humans do. As such, He is the alpha and omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.

I know your works,
suffering (from persecution), and
poverty (but you are spiritually rich)-
and I know the blasphemy of those (lifestyle liars) who say they are Jews (the saved)
but are an assembly (synagogue) of Satan (the unsaved).
Christ knew who they were, what they were doing for Him, and what they were going through.

Christ knew their persecution and suffering (tribulation) as they were the persecuted church.

How can one be poor and rich at the same time? The Overcomers there were stripped of everything they
materially owned and left homeless, hungry, and destitute. That is material poverty.
Besides that, some were desperately alone and some faced being put to death. In
contrast to their material poverty was spritual riches. How were they spiritual rich? They
were rich in the grace of God. It has been said that an Overcomer, when imminently facing death
as a martyr, is given an extra measure of grace by God (Christ takes the sting out of death).
Are there other scrolls in the bible that appear to reveal this? Yes. Here are a few-
(2 Corinthians 6:10).
Listen, my beloved brethren- has God not chosen the poor of this world to be rich in
faith and heirs of the kingdom that He promised to those who love Him?
(James 2:5).
Christ knew those in their midst who were living and preaching a lie.
