Because you say- I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing and do not know that you are (spiritually) wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked- and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked...
(Revelation 3:17)

I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined by fire, that you may become rich- and white garments, that you may clothe yourself and that the shame of your (spiritual) nakedness may not be revealed- and eye salve to anoint your eyes that you may see
(Revelation 3:18).

Are there any Bible scriptures that might help us understand these verses here in Revelation? In my opinion I think so-

Revelation 3:17
Because you say- I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing and do not know that you are (spiritually) wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked-

I am Rich, Have Become Wealthy,
and Have Need of Nothing (Spiritual)

Did these folks commit the sin of self-sufficiency? (1 Chronicles 21:2-8). What is the Lord teaching here? One is spiritually blind who believes that material riches are the permanent answers to life. The kingdom of this world is the reverse or backwards to the Kingdom of God. Everything in this world is transient and passing away- nothing, including gold, will last forever. The Lord is the true riches and it is wise to possess Him and be spiritually rich in Him.

God appears to reveal more on this subject in several scrolls of Revelation:

It is revealed in Revelation Scroll Number Three-
I know your works, tribulation, and poverty but you are (spiritually) rich
(Revelation 2:9).

It is revealed in Revelation Scroll Number Eight-
I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be (spiritually) rich
(Revelation 3:18).

and it is revealed in Revelation Scroll Number Ten-
The fruit that your soul longed for has gone from you, and all the things that are rich and splendid have gone from you, and you shall find them no more at all. The merchants of these things, who became rich by her, will stand at a distance for fear of her torment, weeping and wailing, and saying- alas, alas, that great city that was clothed in fine linen, purple, and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls! For in one hour such great riches came to nothing
(Revelation 18:14-17).

Riches for some can become an idol to worship but God wants your worship instead. Are there other scrolls in the bible that appear to reveal this? Yes. Here are a few:

Then He (Jesus) said- beware! Do not be greedy for what you do not have. Real life is not measured by how much we own. And He gave an illustration- a rich man had a fertile farm that produced fine crops. In fact, his barns were full to overflowing. So he said- I know! I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones. Then I will have room enough to store everything. And I will sit back and say to myself, my friend, you have enough stored away for years to come. Now take it easy! Eat, drink, and be merry! But God said to him- you fool! You will die this very night. Then who will get it all? Yes, a person is a fool to store up earthly wealth but not have a rich relationship with God
(Luke 12:15-21).

Now he who received seed among the thorns is he who hears the word, and the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful
(Matthew 13:22).

And when Jesus saw that He became very sorrowful, He said- how hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God
(Luke 18:24).

If therefore you have not proved yourselves faithful in dealing with the wealth that is tainted with fraud, who will entrust to you the true riches?
(Luke 16:11).

There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day. But there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, full of sores, who was laid at his gate, desiring to be fed with the crumbs that fell from the rich man's table. Moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died and was buried. And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. Then he cried and said- Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue- for I am tormented in this flame. But Abraham said- Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things- but now he is comforted and you are tormented. And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us
(Luke 16:19-26).

...he swallows down riches and vomits them up again- God casts them out of his belly
(Job 20:15).

Will your riches, or all the mighty forces, keep you from distress?
(Job 36:19).

There is a severe evil that I have seen under the sun- riches kept for their owner to his hurt
(Ecclesiastes 5:13).

Command those who are rich in this present age not to be prideful, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, Who gives us richly all things to enjoy. Let them do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share, storing up for themselves a good foundation for the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life
(1 Timothy 6:17-19).

You are (spiritually) Wretched, Miserable, Poor, Blind, and Naked...

Were these folks spiritually neglectful? What is the Lord continuing to say here to them? As mentioned before, the worship of riches can be an idol. Since it appears that that was the case then the Lord did not hold these folks in high esteem. Without Him, these folks were the equivalent of a spiritual train wreck.

James Coffman in his New Testament commentary had this to say-
"There was plenty of money, but they were (spiritually) poor; there was plenty of the finest clothing on earth, but they were (spiritually) naked; there was healing for many in the medical school, but they were (spiritually) blind...and knowest not...the worst thing about their condition was their total ignorance of the true nature of it. They had evidently mistaken "the good life" for the (spiritually) righteous life. They boasted of their riches and professed to need nothing (spiritually) whatever; and yet they were the (spiritually) neediest of all..."

Spiritual Blindness

The Lord said these folks were spiritually blind. That is serious for God's Overcomers. It appears this scripture portion on spiritual blindness stands alone in Revelation and is not repeated in multiple scrolls. Are there other scrolls in the bible that appear to reveal this? Yes, so let us take a look at a few of them-

His watchmen are blind, They are all ignorant- they are all dumb dogs, they cannot bark- sleeping, lying down, loving to slumber. Yes, they are greedy dogs that never have enough. And they are shepherds who cannot understand- they all look to their own way, every one for his own gain, from his own territory
(Isaiah 56:10-11).

I will bring distress upon men, and they shall walk like blind men, because they have sinned against the Lord- their blood shall be poured out like dust, and their flesh like refuse. Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them in the Day of the Lord's anger...
(Zephaniah 1:17-18).

Let them alone. They are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind leads the blind, both will fall into a ditch (Matthew 15:14)...Blind Pharisees! First wash the inside of the cup, and then the outside will become clean, too.
(Matthew 23:26).

And Jesus said- for judgment I have come into this world, that those who do not see may see, and that those who see may be made blind
(John 9:39).

He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, lest they should see with their eyes, lest they should understand with their hearts and turn, so that I should heal them
(John 12:40).

You shall not pervert justice- you shall not show partiality, nor take a bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and twists the words of the righteous
(Deuteronomy 16:19).

What then? Israel has not obtained what it seeks- but the elect have obtained it, and the rest were blinded. Just as it is written- God has given them a spirit of stupor, eyes that they should not see and ears that they should not hear, to this very day. And David says- let their table become a snare and a trap, a stumbling block and a recompense to them. Let their eyes be darkened, so that they do not see, and bow down their back always (Romans 11:7-10)... For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own opinion, that blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in
(Romans 11:25).

...unlike Moses, who put a veil over his face so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at the end of what was passing away. But their minds were blinded. For until this day the same veil remains unlifted in the reading of the Old Testament, because the veil is taken away in Christ. But even to this day, when Moses is read, a veil lies on their heart. Nevertheless when one turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away (2 Corinthians 3:13-16)... But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them. For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord
(2 Corinthians 4:3-5).

...having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart
(Ephesians 4:18).

For he who lacks these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins
(2 Peter 1:9).

But he who hates his brother is in darkness and walks in darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes
(1 John 2:11).

Revelation 3:18
I counsel you to buy from Me (spiritual) gold refined by fire, that you may become (spiritually) rich- and white garments, that you may clothe yourself and that the shame of your (spiritual) nakedness may not be revealed- and eye salve to anoint your eyes that you may (spiritually) see.

I Counsel You

Wisdom has two parts
1) Having a lot to say
2) Not saying it

Jesus Christ is a counselor. It appears this scripture portion stands alone in Revelation and is not repeated in multiple scrolls. But is there another scroll in the bible that appears to reveal this? Yes- it is in Isaiah:

For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given- and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace
(Isaiah 9:6).

It appears God gave good counsel to kings who apparently asked for it. They trusted God-

Then the Philistines once again made a raid on the valley. Therefore David inquired again of God, and God said to him- you shall not go up after them- circle around them, and come upon them in front of the mulberry trees. And it shall be, when you hear a sound of marching in the tops of the mulberry trees, then you shall go out to battle, for God has gone out before you to strike the camp of the Philistines. So David did as God commanded him, and they drove back the army of the Philistines from Gibeon as far as Gezer. Then the fame of David went out into all lands, and the Lord brought the fear of him upon all nations
(1 Chronicles 14:13-17).

...then the Spirit of the Lord came upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, in the middle of the assembly. And he said- listen, all you of Judah and you inhabitants of Jerusalem, and you, King Jehoshaphat! Thus says the Lord to you- do not be afraid nor dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but God's. Tomorrow go down against them. They will surely come up by the Ascent of Ziz, and you will find them at the end of the brook before the Wilderness of Jeruel. You will not need to fight in this battle. Position yourselves, stand still and see the salvation of the Lord, who is with you, O Judah and Jerusalem! Do not fear or be dismayed- tomorrow go out against them, for the Lord is with you. And Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground, and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem bowed before the Lord, worshiping the Lord. Then the Levites of the children of the Kohathites and of the children of the Korahites stood up to praise the Lord God of Israel with voices loud and high. So they rose early in the morning and went out into the Wilderness of Tekoa- and as they went out, Jehoshaphat stood and said- hear me, O Judah and you inhabitants of Jerusalem- believe in the Lord your God, and you shall be established- believe His prophets, and you shall prosper. And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed those who should sing to the Lord, and who should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army and were saying- praise the Lord, For His mercy endures forever. Now when they began to sing and to praise, the Lord set ambushes against the people of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah- and they were defeated...
(2 Chronicles 20:14-22).

and it appears God the Son gave good counsel to a rich young ruler but to no avail-

Now a certain ruler asked Him, saying- Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? So Jesus said to him- why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. You know the commandments- do not commit adultery, do not murder, do not steal, do not bear false witness, honor your father and your mother. And he said- all these things I have kept from my youth. So when Jesus heard these things, He said to him- you still lack one thing. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in Heaven- and come, follow Me. But when he heard this, he became very sorrowful, for he was very rich
(Luke 18:18-23).

To Buy from Me
(Spiritual) Gold Refined by Fire, that you May Become (Spiritually) Rich

Gold can be symbolic for other things. Purifying gold by fire frees the gold from dross. It appears this scripture portion stands alone in Revelation and is not repeated in multiple scrolls. However, is there another scroll or two in the bible that appears to reveal this? Yes:

...that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ
(1 Peter 1:7).

Ho! Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters- and you who have no money, come, buy and eat. Yes, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend money for what is not bread, and your wages for what does not satisfy? Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good, and let your soul delight itself in abundance. Incline your ear, and come to Me. Hear, and your soul shall live- and I will make an everlasting covenant with you- the sure mercies of David
(Isaiah 55:1-3).

Let me add this: if you need something you have to go to the one who has it to sell to you. If you need something from the Lord then you have to go to Him to buy it. The Lord's storehouse is full- He has it filled and is willing to sell to you. Why does God own it all? The Lord owns everything on the planet because He created it all. As a rule, you own whatever you create. Is there scripture on that? Yes:

All things have been delivered to Me by My Father
(Matthew 11:27).

All things that the Father has are Mine
(John 16:15).

For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him
(Colossians 1:16).

All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made
(John 1:3).

Now the multitude of those who believed were of one heart and one soul- neither did anyone say that any of the things he possessed was his own...
(Acts 4:32).

Therefore let no one boast in men. For all things are yours...
(1 Corinthians 3:21).

How are we going to buy something from the Lord? What do we have to offer and what does He want in return? He owns the cattle on a thousand hills (Psalm 50:10). Obviously, He does not want anything material so He must want something else. What is it? His price is that He wants you to be His love slave- a love slave who loves Him and others, who belongs to Him, who is true and loyal to Him, who does His will, who is His friend and has fellowship with Him, who does things His way, and one who is obedient to Him (John 3:16-21).

What kind of spiritual riches does the Lord have to sell us?

I love those who love Me, and those who seek Me diligently will find Me. Riches and honor are with Me, enduring riches and righteousness. My fruit is better than gold, yes, than fine gold, and My revenue than choice silver. I traverse the way of righteousness, in the middle of the paths of justice, that I may cause those who love Me to inherit wealth, that I may fill their treasuries
(Proverbs 8:17-21).

Happy is the man who finds wisdom, and the man who gains understanding- for her proceeds are better than the profits of silver, and her gain than fine gold. She is more precious than rubies, and all the things you may desire cannot compare with her. Length of days is in her right hand, in her left hand riches and honor. Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her, and happy are all who retain her
(Proverbs 3:13-18).

Therefore give to Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people, that I may discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of Yours? The speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing. Then God said to him-
Because you have asked this thing, and have not asked long life for yourself, nor have asked riches for yourself, nor have asked the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern justice, behold, I have done according to your words- see, I have given you a wise and understanding heart, so that there has not been anyone like you before you, nor shall any like you arise after you. And I have also given you what you have not asked- both riches and honor...
(1 Kings 3:9-13).

Through faith, Moses, when he grew to manhood, refused to be known as Pharaoh's daughter's son, having determined to endure ill-treatment along with the people of God rather than enjoy the short-lived pleasures of sin- because he deemed the reproaches that he might meet with in the service of the Christ to be greater riches than all the treasures of Egypt- for he fixed his gaze on the coming reward
(Hebrews 11:24-26).

In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace (Ephesians 1:7)...But God, Who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the Heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 2:4)...that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ
(Ephesians 3:8).

(Spiritual) White Garments

It appears this revelation was previously revealed in Revelation Scroll Number Six

Sin adds to your trouble, subtracts from your energy,
multiplies your difficulties, and divides you from God

Your (Spiritual) Nakedness

The Lord revealed to them that they were spiritually naked and that the shame of their nakedness not be revealed for all to see. What is spiritual nakedness? Albert Barnes in his commentary remarked that as one clothes the body, so the soul of one also needs to be clothed. Why? So that the shame of its sinfulness may not be exhibited and that it may not be offensive and repellent. It appears this scripture portion stands alone in Revelation and is not repeated in multiple scrolls. Are there other scrolls in the bible that appear to reveal this? I believe so:

And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed (Genesis 2:25)...So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked- and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings. And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. Then the Lord God called to Adam and said to him- where are you? So he said- I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked- and I hid myself. And He said- who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat?
(Genesis 3:6-11).

An altar of earth you shall make for Me, and you shall sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your peace offerings, your sheep and your oxen. In every place where I record My name I will come to you, and I will bless you. And if you make Me an altar of stone, you shall not build it of hewn stone; for if you use your tool on it, you have profaned it. Nor shall you go up by steps to My altar, that your (spiritual) nakedness may not be exposed on it
(Exodus 20:24-26).

For thus says the Lord God- surely I will deliver you into the hand of those you hate, into the hand of those from whom you alienated yourself. They will deal hatefully with you, take away all you have worked for, and leave you (spiritually) naked and bare. The nakedness of your harlotry shall be uncovered- both your lewdness and your harlotry
(Ezekiel 23:28-29).

Your Eyes That You May (Spiritually) See

Calamity clarifies, comfort confuses, persecution purifies, prosperity pollutes

Salve for eye problems was manufactured in Laodicea so the Overcomers there understood eyesight problems. Therefore, Christ tells them they are spiritually blind and to anoint their eyes with spiritual eye salve that they may spiritually see. What did God want them to see? Albert Barnes in his commentary on the bible stated that they needed spiritual healing from blindness to see clearly the character of God, the beauty of the way of salvation, and the loveliness of the person and work of Christ.

It appears this scripture portion stands alone in Revelation and is not repeated in multiple scrolls. Are there other scrolls in the bible that appear to reveal this? I believe so-

The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
(Matthew 6:22-23).

In that day shall men look to their Maker, and their eyes shall have respect to the Holy One of Israel
(Isaiah 17:7).

The opposite of spiritual blindness is spiritual sight- especially sight in the light. It is good for God's Overcomers to walk in God's light. Are there other scrolls in the bible that appear to reveal this? I think so:

Spiritual Light For God's Overcomer:

Spiritual light from Jesus is a sign of divine favor for the Overcomer-
And the Lord said to Moses- stretch out your hand toward Heaven that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt- even darkness that may be felt. And Moses stretched out his hand toward Heaven- and there was a thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days- they did not see one another, neither rose any from his place for three days- but all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings
(Exodus 10:21-23).

Spiritual light from Jesus is a sign of divine guidance for the Overcomer-
...and the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way- and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light- to go by day and night
(Exodus 13:21).

Spiritual light from Jesus is a sign of divine love and protection for the Overcomer-
And it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel- and it was a cloud and darkness to them, but it gave light by night to these- so that the one came not near the other all the night
(Exodus 14:20).

Spiritual light from Jesus dispells spiritual darkness for the Overcomer->
And you shall make the seven lamps thereof- and they shall light the lamps thereof, that they may give light over against it
(Exodus 25:37).

Spiritual light from Jesus lasts forever for the Overcomer-
...and you shalt command the children of Israel to bring you pure beaten olive oil for the light to cause the lamp to burn always
(Exodus 27:20; Leviticus 24:2).

Spiritual light from Jesus is unlimited to the Overcomer-
...and every wise hearted among you shall come, and make all that the Lord has commanded...the candlestick also for the light, and its furniture, and its lamps, with the oil for the light
(Exodus 35:10 & 14).

Spiritual light from Jesus is as a pleasant aroma (spice & sweet incense) and the sweet presence of God (anointing oil) to the Overcomer-
...and spice, and oil for the light, and for the anointing oil, and for the sweet incense
(Exodus 35:8 & 28).

Let each of us be an Overcomer and enjoy the presence of the Lord and His light and all He has to offer us for all of eternity.
