Genesis Chapter 36
Edom, Edomites, and the Amalekites

"Now these are the generations of Esau, who is Edom. Esau took his wives of the daughters of Canaan; Adah the daughter of Elon the Hittite, and Aholibamah the daughter of Anah the daughter of Zibeon the Hivite; and Bashemath Ishmael's daughter, sister of Nebajoth. And Adah bare to Esau Eliphaz; and Bashemath bare Reuel; and Aholibamah bare Jeush, and Jaalam, and Korah: these are the sons of Esau, which were born unto him in the land of Canaan. And Esau took his wives, and his sons, and his daughters, and all the persons of his house, and his cattle, and all his beasts, and all his substance, which he had got in the land of Canaan; and went into the country from the face of his brother Jacob. For their riches were more than that they might dwell together; and the land wherein they were strangers could not bear them because of their cattle. Thus dwelt Esau in mount Seir: Esau is Edom. And these are the generations of Esau the father of the Edomites in mount Seir: these are the names of Esau's sons; Eliphaz the son of Adah the wife of Esau, Reuel the son of Bashemath the wife of Esau. And the sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho, and Gatam, and Kenaz. And Timna was concubine to Eliphaz Esau's son; and she bare to Eliphaz Amalek: these were the sons of Adah Esau's wife. And these are the sons of Reuel; Nahath, and Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah: these were the sons of Bashemath Esau's wife. And these were the sons of Aholibamah, the daughter of Anah the daughter of Zibeon, Esau's wife: and she bare to Esau Jeush, and Jaalam, and Korah. These were dukes of the sons of Esau: the sons of Eliphaz the firstborn son of Esau; duke Teman, duke Omar, duke Zepho, duke Kenaz, Duke Korah, duke Gatam, and duke Amalek: these are the dukes that came of Eliphaz in the land of Edom; these were the sons of Adah. And these are the sons of Reuel Esau's son; duke Nahath, duke Zerah, duke Shammah, duke Mizzah: these are the dukes that came of Reuel in the land of Edom; these are the sons of Bashemath Esau's wife. And these are the sons of Aholibamah Esau's wife; duke Jeush, duke Jaalam, duke Korah: these were the dukes that came of Aholibamah the daughter of Anah, Esau's wife. These are the sons of Esau, who is Edom, and these are their dukes"
(Genesis 36:1-19).

The beginning of the Edomites:
Remember that Esau was the father of the Edomites. The name Esau means "he that acts". The name Edom means "red"
(Genesis 25:29-30). Moses, the human author of Genesis, liked to explain the seed or the beginning of things. In this chapter of the bible book of Genesis, he explained the seed or the beginning of the nation of Edom. Later, Edom bordered southern Israel. Esau's ungodly legacy is written here for all to study. The Edomites were partly descended from the godly seed of Shem, Noah's son. This heritage came to them through Esau but they threw away their godly spiritual heritage and embraced Satan. When did that happen? It started when Esau (of godly parents) married "children of men", idol worshipping women of the Horites. That was the same kind of thing that happened before the great flood that nearly extinguished true faith in God from the earth in those days
(Genesis 6:2). Some folks never learn the lessons that God, through His Word, have to offer. They remain willfully ignorant through life. I hope that you and I are spiritually wiser than Esau was.

Note: in verse fifteen, in the English King James translation, are the words "duke" and "dukes". Some interpretations are culturally based for ease of understanding. Those are simply English translation words from the original Hebrew word 'alluwph meaning "chief" and "chiefs". Those Edomite chiefs were mostly heads of households who became heads of tribes along with land and wealth.

In this chapter of the bible book of Genesis, Moses also explained the seed or the beginning of the nation of the Amalekites. The name Amalek means "one that licks up". He was probably named that as a baby- I wonder what the occasion was...Esau is not known as the father of the Amalekites. Why? Because Amalek was the grandson of Esau and not his son. Much later, the tribe of Amalek had war with the Israelites and so did the Edomites.

Did Esau's children love and follow the Lord? I think not. Those folks became idol worshippers and servants of Satan by choice. They hated God and God's people and proved it. How? Over 400 years later, they were hostile against Israel on their exodus wilderness march. The Amalekites did attack Israel
(Exodus 17:8-16) and Edom threatened to attack Israel (Numbers 20:14-21). General Moses had to contend with those tribes at that time and he wanted us to know something about them, where they came from, and how they got started into rebellion against God.

The territory of Edom in the days of Moses was about 62 square kilometers (100 square miles) in area. In that territory stood Mount Seir, a mountain about .62 kilometers (1 mile or 5,000 feet) high. Sela, later the Nabataean fortress city of Petra, was its early capital city. Edom had income from agriculture, metal working, livestock raising, and tolls from caravans (on the King's Highway) passing through their territory.

The seed or beginning of the tribes in the Mount Seir area:
"These are the sons of Seir the Horite, who inhabited the land; Lotan, and Shobal, and Zibeon, and Anah, and Dishon, and Ezer, and Dishan: these are the dukes of the Horites, the children of Seir in the land of Edom. And the children of Lotan were Hori and Hemam; and Lotan's sister was Timna. And the children of Shobal were these; Alvan, and Manahath, and Ebal, Shepho, and Onam. And these are the children of Zibeon; both Ajah, and Anah: this was that Anah that found the mules in the wilderness, as he fed the asses of Zibeon his father. And the children of Anah were these; Dishon, and Aholibamah the daughter of Anah. And these are the children of Dishon; Hemdan, and Eshban, and Ithran, and Cheran. The children of Ezer are these; Bilhan, and Zaavan, and Akan. The children of Dishan are these; Uz, and Aran. These are the dukes that came of the Horites; duke Lotan, duke Shobal, duke Zibeon, duke Anah, Duke Dishon, duke Ezer, duke Dishan: these are the dukes that came of Hori, among their dukes in the land of Seir"
(Genesis 36:20-30).

Moses explained who the first inhabitants of Edom were. They were Horites. Mount Seir was named after Seir the Horite. They were Canaanites who were descended from Ham, Noah's son. They reveled in sexual sins and rebellion against God. They were not a whole lot different from the folks who lived in the city of Sodom who God personally destroyed. The Horites were the folks who became Esau's in-laws and part of his extended family. He was joined at the hip with idol worshippers and servants of Satan. I wonder if he ever regreted any of his bad choices...I wonder if you and I ever regret any of the bad choices that we might have made...

God keeps His promises (government officials of Edom):
"And these are the kings that reigned in the land of Edom, before there reigned any king over the children of Israel. And Bela the son of Beor reigned in Edom: and the name of his city was Dinhabah. And Bela died, and Jobab the son of Zerah of Bozrah reigned in his stead. And Jobab died, and Husham of the land of Temani reigned in his stead. And Husham died, and Hadad the son of Bedad, who smote Midian in the field of Moab, reigned in his stead: and the name of his city was Avith. And Hadad died, and Samlah of Masrekah reigned in his stead. And Samlah died, and Saul of Rehoboth by the river reigned in his stead. And Saul died, and Baalhanan the son of Achbor reigned in his stead. And Baalhanan the son of Achbor died, and Hadar reigned in his stead: and the name of his city was Pau; and his wife's name was Mehetabel, the daughter of Matred, the daughter of Mezahab. And these are the names of the dukes that came of Esau, according to their families, after their places, by their names; duke Timnah, duke Alvah, duke Jetheth, Duke Aholibamah, duke Elah, duke Pinon, Duke Kenaz, duke Teman, duke Mibzar, Duke Magdiel, duke Iram: these be the dukes of Edom, according to their habitations in the land of their possession: he is Esau the father of the Edomites"
(Genesis 36:31-36).

How can this passage of scripture relate to you and I? I believe that God wants us to learn, from this passage of scripture, that He keeps His promises. God's promise to Abraham was that he should be "the father of many nations"- one of which was Edom. And Rebekah was told that "two nations are in thy womb"- one of which was Edom. Here is a listing of the names of important individuals of Edom that prove that God fulfilled His word. The Edomites, like the Israelites, were divided into tribes, which took their names from Esau's descendants. Fourteen are mentioned.

What are some of the promises of God in His Word? Let us take a brief look at some of them for our encouragement:

You have already been pruned for greater fruitfulness by the message I have given you. Remain in Me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful apart from Me. "Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in Me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from Me you can do nothing. Anyone who parts from Me is thrown away like a useless branch and withers. And this is the will of God, that I should not lose even one of all those He has given Me, but that I should raise them to eternal life at the last day. For it is my Father's will that all who see his Son and believe in Him should have eternal life- that I should raise them at the last day"
(John 6:37-40) (NLT).

Anyone who is willing to hear should listen to the Spirit and understand what the Spirit is saying to the churches"

"All who are victorious will be clothed in white. I will never erase their names from the Book of Life, but I will announce before My Father and His angels that they are Mine"
(Revelation 3:5) (NLT).

"Look, I am coming quickly. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take away your crown. All who are victorious will become pillars in the Temple of My God, and they will never have to leave it. And I will write My God's name on them, and they will be citizens in the city of My God- the new Jerusalem that comes down from Heaven from My God. And they will have My new name inscribed upon them. God's promises are like the stars:
the darker the night, the brighter they shine

"Then the Lord said, "I will pardon them as you have requested. But as surely as I live, and as surely as the earth is filled with the Lord's glory, not one of these people will ever enter that land. They have seen My glorious presence and the miraculous signs I performed both in Egypt and in the wilderness, but again and again they tested Me by refusing to listen. They will never even see the land I swore to give their ancestors. None of those who have treated Me with contempt will enter it"
